Meghalaya: Mawphu Power Project (Stage II) suffers another roadblock

Shillong, Nov 03, 2017: The Stage II of the Mawphu Hydel Electricity Project has suffered another major blow with more land owners coming out in the open to oppose the project.

A group of land owners of Theiddieng village, East Khasi hills district on Friday have opposed this hydel power project which is being implemented by NEEPCO.

"We are firm that we will not allow the State Government and NEEPCO to go ahead with the implementation of the project since they have taken over the land and property without the consent of the people," one of the affected land owner, S Syerlait said while talking to media persons said.

According to her,  NEEPCO has damaged her property at Rangshi village under Elaka Theiddieng by constructing a tunnel in her property without taking her consent.

While demanding that NEEPCO should stop all construction work at her property, she also said that proper filling should be done at the tunnel as her property has been damaged.

"Even the headman of the village never consulted us about this project. He (headman) allowed NEEPCO to go ahead without taking the people of the village into confidence," she said adding that the headman along with NEEPCO has suppressed the rights of the landowners in the area.

Informing that the project has affected many landowners in the area, she said, "The local MLA and MDC of the area PN Syiem should intervene and resolve the problems encountered by the people."

"We have written a letter to our local MLA on this issue however till date we have yet to receive any response from him," she added.
