Meghalaya: Jowai-Ratacherra road project lingers with land yet to be acquired

Shillong, August 26, 2017: There is a major uncertainty over the completion of Jowai-Ratacherra road project due to the delay on the part of the State authorities to hand over the land required for the project.

GR Infrastructure which is the firm which is implementing the project wanted to complete road project by February next year but the firm cannot push the implementation of the project on a fast track mode unless the State authorities handed over the land to them.

A visit to the project site by a group of journalist witnessed the construction of the road is almost completed upto Sonapur tunnel however there are many components which are yet to be completed which include the pavement markings, safety signage among many others.

According to the representative of the firm, they will take up the other works relating to the project only when the construction of the road is fully completed.

"We cannot do anything unless the State authorities hand over the land to us. We have set a target to complete the project within February next year. But unless we get the land we will not be able proceed with the work," the representative of the firm stated.

Meanwhile, he said that the physical progress of the work is around 70 percent and It may be mentioned that the expansion work of the NH-44 has been approved under Phase III of the National Highway Development Programme. The completion of the road project will be a huge boost not only to Meghalaya but also to the neighbouring States, Assam and Mizoram.
