NEW DELHI:

A clash broke out at the Singhu border between two groups here on Friday.

According to reports, a group of people claiming to be locals clashed with the protesting farmers.

On learning about the incident, police personnel arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd.

Sources state that the locals residing in the area demanded the farmers to vacate the Singhu border protest site which has been the epicentre of their agitation for the last two months.

The locals and the agitating farmers began throwing sticks and stones and the situation soon turned ugly.

However, prompt action by the volunteers from several farmers' unions and police prevented the situation from escalating further.

Earlier on Thursday, the locals had also taken out a march near the Singhu border asking farmers to vacate the highway.

Security was beefed up in the area following the Republic Day violence, and all entry points were sealed at the Singhu border.

But the clash broke out despite these security measures.
