Tackling the drug menace: Assam DGP releases book on substance abuse

GUWAHATI

The Assam Director General of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta released a comprehensive book on the social threat of drug addiction and alcoholism – Substance Abuse and Recovery - A Handbook at Assam Police Headquarters here on Friday.

Published by the Centre for Substance Abuse Prevention and Care (CSAPC), a public charitable trust, the book has been written and compiled by Rabiul Islam, the managing trustee of CSAPC.

The book describes the complex nature of drug addiction and its impact on society.

The DGP, while releasing the 313-page book, praised Islam for his “labour of love” saying that the handbook will be a useful reference for people in need.

He also said that the state police policy would now change as emphasis would also be given to tackle the social threat, adding that all stakeholders have to work together against fighting the menace.

The writer urged upon the DGP to start a state response team comprising significant stakeholders to plan an effective strategy for substance abuse prevention.

Inspector General of police (CID), Surendar Kumar and social activist, Asomee Dutta Barua were also present at the function.
