AGARTALA | Nov 28, 2019:

Senior IAS Officer and Secretary of the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of Tripura M.L.Dey, is set to replace Sriram Taranikant as new State Election Commissioner.

While the date of replacement has not been finalised, official sources assume that his replacement was probably done keeping an eye on the scheduled ADC elections slated for April 2020 and statewide civic polls in December 2020.

Taranikant's replacement, according to sources, is also linked to his decisions taken with regards to the Lok Sabha and Panchayat polls, some of which did not go down very well with the government.

Therefore, he will be deprived of certain legitimate benefits and will be transferred to a less important post in the run-up to the two major elections next year.
