Nagaland: Legislators disqualification case: NPF to take the matter to higher court

KOHIMA | JULY 16, 2020:

Following the disqualification petition that was declared settled by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker, the legislators resolved to take the matter to a higher court with the consent of the Naga People's Front (NPF) President Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, on Wednesday.

The NLA Speaker, Sharingain Longkumer had disposed of the disqualification petition of the seven NPF MLAs, who defied the party decision on parliamentary election after more than a year of filing the petition, on July 14.

After four-long hours of NPF legislators meeting at NLA, the Leader of Opposition, T.R Zeliang, addressing the media, said the entire proceeding was conducted fairly for the first time in the history of the NLA.

However, at the end of the day, the Speaker has to take the advice of "somebody" because of which the judgment was arbitrary, he said on Wednesday.

"The members resolved to take the matter to a higher court on the consent of the NPF president," he added.

To queries he said, since the Speaker acted on the directive of the Gauhati High Court (GHC), the matter will revert to GHC, he informed.
