NEW DELHI:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, on Tuesday, inaugurated the ‘Maitri Setu’ bridge over the Feni river which connects both nations.

In her inaugural address, Hasina said that the opening of the Feni Bridge is a historic moment for both countries as they would enter a new era of connectivity.

“We are in a region which has remained conservative in opening-up, and international trade is far below potential. I believe political boundaries should not become physical trade barriers,” Hasina said.

Meanwhile, Modi informed that the ‘Maitri Setu’ bridge would help build bilateral relations and friendly ties between India and Bangladesh.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd constructed the Feni bridge at a project cost of Rs 133 crore.

The 1.9 km long bridge connects Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh and is expected to herald a new chapter for trade and people-to-people movement between the two countries.
