Northeast CMs greet citizens on Constitution Day

SHILLONG:
Constitution Day or 'Samvidhan Divas' is celebrated on November 26 every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India.
Although the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, but it came into effect only on January 26, 1950. The day January 26 is significant as this was the day the pledge of Poorna Swaraj (total independence) was taken against the British and was passed in the Lahore session of the Congress in 1930.
The Government of India declared November 26 as Constitution Day on November 19, 2015 by a gazette notification.
The day, formerly known as the Law Day, is also a mark of respect towards Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was responsible for drafting of the Constitution and was also India’s first Law and Justice minister.
