NEW DELHI:

Continuous chaos in the Rajya Sabha has posed a challenge to sitting MP from Meghalaya Dr Wanweiroy Kharlukhi to impress upon the central government to include Khasi and Garo language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution.

Talking to The Northeast Today (TNT), Dr Kharlukhi, a sitting MP representing National Peoples’ Party (NPP) said that Meghalaya comprises of two ethnic groups-Jaintia and Garo.

“...These two groups speak different languages but the sad part is that inspite of the demand made by the people, our language has not yet been included in the 8th schedule of the constitution,” Dr Kharlukhi said.

He said that a resolution was passed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for the inclusion of Khasi and Garom language in the 8th schedule of the Constitution but nothing was done.

He further said, “Today we are a State of almost 50 years but without a recognised language.”

Dr Kharlukhi tried to raise the issue in the current session of the Parliament from time and again but the continuous disturbance has posed a challenge for him.

“...though for almost 50 years we are a state without a language but at least on attaining 50 years of State-hood on January 21, 2022, the government may recognise us by including then Khasi and Garo language in the eighth schedule of the constitution,” D Kharlukhi said.
