India reports less than 2 lakh COVID-19 cases for first time since mid-April

This is the first time that the official date has recorded less than 2 lakh cases in the last 40 days. The country crossed the grim 2 lakh plus milestone on April 15, 2021.

In a significant decline in COVID-19 cases, India on Tuesday reported 1,96,427 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, with 3741 deaths.

This is the first time that the official date has recorded less than 2 lakh cases in the last 40 days. The country crossed the grim 2 lakh plus milestone on April 15, 2021.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), the country recorded 3,26,850 fresh recoveries in the last 24 hours, outnumbering the new cases being reported.

The cumulative caseload in India now stands at 2,69,48,874 including 25,86,782 active cases.

India's total death total has mounted to 3,07,231, while the recovery tally has reached 2,40,54,861 in numbers.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 33,25,94,176 samples have been tested for COVID-19 up to May 24, of which 20,58,112 samples were tested on Monday.

Furthermore, as many as 19,85,38,999 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country since the commencement of the vaccination drive on January 16, 2021.

The COVID-19 positivity rate in the country has declined to 12.66 per cent, while the national recovery rate has improved and touched 88.69 per cent, the MoHFW stated.

Karnataka with 4,40,435 active infections has overtaken Maharashtra as the worst pandemic hit state in the country.
