NEW DELHI | JULY 3, 2020:

India is looking to launch its first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine (BBV152 COVID vaccine) by August 15.

The Indian Council of Media Research (ICMR) has also directed medical institutions to fast track all approvals related to clinical trials and to ensure that subject enrolment is initiated on or before July 7.

"The ICMR partnered with Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) for clinical trials of indigenous vaccine 'Covaxin'. The vaccine is one of the top priority projects monitored at the topmost level by the Indian Government," said CMR Director-General, Dr Balram Bhargava.

One may also note that the indigenous, inactivated vaccine was developed and manufactured in Bharat Biotech's facility in Genome Valley, Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, BBIL is working rapidly to meet its target, however, the outcome will depend on the cooperation of all clinical trial sites involved with the project.
