NEW DELHI:

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced the extension of the ongoing lockdown in New Delhi by over a week, amid the national capital still showing a high positivity rate.

"Coronavirus continues to wreak havoc in the city. Public opinion is that lockdown should increase. So the lockdown is being extended for one week," said Kejriwal.

The lockdown which was scheduled to end at 5 pm on April  26 will now continue till 5 am on May 3.

The CM stated that they will have to watch the situation for a few more days if the cases increase or decrease in the NCR.

Meanwhile, the positivity rate in Delhi had jumped to 36-37 per cent in the past few days, standing at 29 per cent on Sunday with a slight dip.

The extended lockdown will continue to impose restrictions, however, the government will give concessions to courier service and self-employed people providing services, including electricians, plumbers and water purifier repairs-who will need an e-pass.

Children's bookstores and electric fan shops are also exempted from the purview of the lockdown.
