NEW DELHI:

The Delhi Government will provide free COVID-19 vaccines to everyone 18 years of age, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday, adding that approval has been given for the purchase of 1.34 crore doses.

"Today we have approved the purchase of 1.34 crore vaccines. We will make an effort to ensure that it is purchased soon and administered at the earliest to the people," Kejriwal said in an address.

There are a few other states who have decided to provide free vaccines including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Kejriwal further urged the people to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible, stating that vaccinated people are less likely to get the infection and the people who do get it have mild symptoms.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged everyone to take the vaccine, and not to get swayed by any rumour doing rounds about the vaccine.

India administered more than 25 lakh 36 thousand doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in the last 24 hours on Monday.
