NEW DELHI:

Serum Institute of India's CEO Adar Poonawalla on Wednesday announced that its COVID-19 vaccine Covishield price has been reduced from Rs 400 per dose to Rs 300 for all states with immediate effect as a "philanthropic gesture."

Taking to Twitter, Poonawalla said, "As a philanthropic gesture on behalf of @SerumInstIndia, I hereby reduce the price to the states from Rs.400 to Rs.300 per dose, effective immediately; this will save thousands of crores of state funds going forward. This will enable more vaccinations and save countless lives."

However, the price of the vaccine in the private market remains the same at Rs 600 per dose.

On the other hand, Bharat Biotech has fixed the price of its COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin, at Rs 600 per dose for state governments and at Rs 1,200 per dose for private hospitals.

The announcement comes just days before India expansion of its COVID-19 vaccination drive by allowing its large 18-plus population to get inoculated from May 1.

The registration process of the third phase of the inoculation drive for 18 years and above began at 4 pm on April 28.

All willing to get the vaccination from May 1 can register themselves on the website www.cowin.gov.in.
