Ahead of its plans to construct a mega-dam over the Brahmaputra river, China has completed the construction of a strategic highway through the Brahmaputra Canyon near India's Arunachal Pradesh border.

The 67.22 km long highway, completed at a cost of about $310 million, passes directly through the Brahmaputra Canyon, known as the world's deepest canyon in the world, Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported.

The construction is tactical for China as the highway cuts travel time by eight hours between two strategically key regions, Pad Township and Medog County.

The country has already cleared a plan through its parliament to construct a mega-dam over the Brahmaputra river passing through China, a move on which India has expressed concerns as the Brahmaputra is the major source of water for the northeastern plains of India.
