Black Fungus: Central Govt provides licence to 5 companies for Amphotericin B vaccine production

As cases of Black Fungus continue to increase in India, the centre has given licence to five companies to ramp up the production of Liposomal Amphotericin B (AmBisome) injections used in the treatment of Mucormycosis or COVID-triggered fungal infection.

The approval comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had instructed the officials in the health department to get the drug from anywhere in the world.

Indian Missions across the world have been involved in securing supplies of Amphotericin B vials.

According to sources, more than 1,21,000 vails of AmBisome have reached India so far, and another 85,000 vails of the drug are on the way.

US company Gilead Sciences will supply another one million doses of AmBisome to India through Mylan, govt sources have informed.

Amid, the shortage of the drug, the government is trying to procure Amphotericin B and expedite the supply to the States and Union Territories.
