Amid protests by Opposition, Rajya Sabha adjourned; Citizenship Amendment Bill likely to be tabled after 2 pm

NEW DELHI, February 12, 2019: Amid protests by Opposition, Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Tuesday.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh will likely table the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill when the Rajya Sabha resumes the session at 2pm today. The bill was passed in Lok Sabha in January.

Assam and other north-eastern states have been witnessing protests over the Bill that seeks to provide citizenship to religious minority groups from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The latest to raise voice against the bill is Tej Hazarika, son of Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika who has been posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna.
