TANAHUN (NEPAL):

Intending to raise awareness of gender equality, wives in Nepal carried their husbands on their backs on International Women’s Day, on March 8.

The gender awareness programme was held in a local school playground in Devghat Village Council, Asian News International (ANI) reported.

There were about 16 couples who took part in the 100-meter race, it said.

“I participated in this race by carrying my husband on my back. I came here with a lot of courage and devotion. Although I did not secure the top position, I am happy that women are also given priority and respect,” Pashupati Shreshtha, a participant was quoted saying.

The village is about 150 km away from the capital city of Kathmandu.

Durga Bahadur Thapa, event organiser and village chief said that it was a friendly game, to spread awareness about gender equality.

The couples were much appreciated for their active participation.
