Top ten young filmmakers from the Northeast to lookout for
With Northeast India gradually coming up as one of the favourite destination for filmmaking, let's not forget that the region, having been blessed with natural and unblemished beauty, is also home to talented and skilled filmmakers who have managed to create waves not only in the region but across the country and beyond.
Here are a list of young filmmakers from the Northeast to lookout for
## Chow Partha Borgohain: After his schooling in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, Borgohain completed a photography and filmmaking course at the Madras Christian College and later joined the Mindscreen Film School to study film and motion photography. Thereafter, he worked as an assistant with renowned cinematographer and director Rajiv Menon, where he worked on various feature films and advertisements. His latest achievements are a feature film 1962: My Country Land which has been screened at the Cannes International Film Festival.
## Oinam Doren: A passionate film-maker, intense writer, active social worker, talented photographer, producer … the list of skills and passions never come to an end. He is Oinam Doren, a multi-talented lad who honed his skills for a career in the womb of St. Anthony's College, Shillong. His latest documentary is called 'Songs of Mashangva' which deals with the above issue by taking into account the Tangkhul Naga tribes. The project is complete and the commencement of the promotion of the film will begin any time soon. The movie is ready to tour India and the world. He received international recognition for his movie — 'My Name is Eeooow'. This movie shot in a small village in Meghalaya was screened in various film festivals across the world.
## Wanglen Khundongbam: A bright young filmmaker from Manipur, Khundongbam wants to make his homeland Manipur known to the outside world. After learning Digital Filmmaking in Bangkok and doing a stint in London's Middlesex University, 26-year-old Khundongbam came back to Manipur to make films. Hs first film 'Pallepfam' has made headlines already. He is also MD of The Bluebird Pictures, which has served as the film's producer. It has been shown at several film festivals and got positive reviews.
## Sange Dorjee Thongdok: He is a noted filmmaker from Arunachal Pradesh. Last year, he was selected for the Berlinale Talents 2016 which took place in Germany. Berlinale Talents is the annual summit and networking platform of the Berlin International Film Festival for 300 outstanding persons from the fields of film and drama. Thongdok's Crossing Bridges, received Rajat Kamal at the National Film Awards in 2013. Prior to the film, he made two short films, Evening Cafe and Pratyabartan.
##Kenny Basumatary: This young film maker is an Indian Bodo Actor and Film director in Assamese Cinema. He is best known for Directing Assamese martial arts comedy film Local Kung Fu he also starred in the movie. it was nominated for best Assamese film in the inaugural Filmfare awards for the Eastern region.This film budget was only ninety thousand rupees.
## Kivini Shohe: He is a noted filmmaker from Nagaland who won the best documentary film from the Northeast under the segment Our Stories at the Film Northeast 2016 festival in 2016. His film called Oh My Soul explores the struggle of three homosexual men in Dimapur. It is the first ever documentation of a community haunted by taboo and denial.
## Wanphrang Diengdoh: Wanphrang Diengdoh is a filmmaker from Meghalaya who has made award winning films like 19/87 (with Dondor Lyngdoh) & Where the Clouds End. His skills aren't confined to film making only, Diengdoh is also a musician of Shillong's pathbreaking politico-punk band Tarik.
## Sesino Yhoshu: Yhoshu love for films started way back in the late 90s while she was still in high school, pursued Mass Communication and Video Production from St. Anthony's college, Shillong, she then specialized in Cinematography from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). She went on to receive a Master's degree in Documentary by Practice from Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. She directed "Apfütsa", a video portrait reflecting on the timeperiod of her grandfather. The film was screened at the National Portrait Gallery, London, Bang Short Film Festival, Nottingham, University of Rochester, New York and Rubin Museum of Art, New York. Her other works include "The Imaginary Line" and "The Story of a House", a film she co-directed with Sophy Lasuh. In September 2014, she founded Take One, a production company based in Kohima, Nagaland.
## Sophy Lasuh: A young filmmaker from Nagaland, Lasuh completed her Master's degree in Film & Television from Edinburgh College of Art, UK in 2008. She worked as a film editor with Edinburgh College of Art before joining NDTV. She has now returned to Nagaland, where she co-owns Cue Hue with Sesino Yhoshu. Their first production, "The Story of a House" was screened at various film festivals and was well received at New York in particular. She is also a recipient of Young Achievers Award in the field of film making which was conferred by the Dalmia Group earlier this year. It is worth mentioning that her graduation film, "Children of Silence", a hard-hitting documentary film about the atrocities committed in Nagaland under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act of 1958, was also shortlisted by the College for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.
## Simi Khongthiang: This promising film maker from Meghalaya, whose identity is perhaps known to almost everyone in Meghalaya, is known by some as the 'Face' of Jaintia Hills owing to her effort to raise the standard of film making in this area. Some of her movies — Da Theh Lut 1 and 2, Skop besides received a tsunami of appreciations from film makers of the state. She has produced and directed as many as 15 films and managed to set a a benchmark for film making in coal deposit rich Jaintia Hills.
