Gang rape convicts get 10-year jail after five years

AGARTALA: After five years, two gang rape survivors got justice when a local court in Khowai District on Friday convicted three tribal youths on the charge of gang-rape and awarded 10 year jail.

The court also imposed fine of Rs. 9,000 failing which they have to undergo additional three months in jail.

The three convicts were identified as Inpren Debbarma, Anup Debbarma and Dasu Debbarma.

Court sources said that the trio raped one Malindra Debbarma's wife and cousin sister at Ratanpur under Khowai Police Station while they were returning late night from a festival on the occasion of tribal New Year –Tring on February 22 in 2010.

The three rape convicts were arrested following case registered by Malendra Debbarma at the concerned police station the following day.

Based on their investigation, two investigating officers – Asish Sarkar and Palash Datta had submitted charge sheet accusing the three youths in the court on July 12 in 2012.

Following a long time trial, the Khowai Additional District  and Session Judge court convicted them under Section 341/323/376 (2) (G) of Indian Penal Code.

The convicts were awarded one month jail with Rs. 3,000 as fine under Section 341 failing which they have to spend additional three months in jail. Again, under Section 323, they have to undergo 6 months in jail with Rs. 3,000 as fine, or they have to spend more three months in jail. They would have to spend 10 years in jail under Section 376 (2) (G) with Rs. 3,000 as fine, otherwise they have to again undergo additional three months in jail. (TNT News)
