GUWAHATI: A brutal murder post rape of a college student, one attempt to murder of a hostel girl and gang rape of a woman has shaken the city of Guwahati in the last 24 hours. Crime against women in the gateway of NE is not seeing a reducing trend even though the district administration is busy in taking pride in raising of special forces like Veerangana exclusively for women safety.
The vicious cycle of crime started from Tuesday evening, when the local people of Noonmati found the body of an 18 year old girl of of a college in that area. The body was found necked in a nearby jungle and the neck was silted brutally. The police later confirmed that the girl was brutally raped by someone in the jungle. The parents stated that she was going for tuition class.
“My daughter was my everything, she went to the tuition and never came back” says the devastated mother of the girl.
Later, the local people of the area along with the body of the girl,took out a protest rally against the failure of the law and order department to protect women safety in Guwahati. On Wednesday, hundreds of students of the college wherein the girl was enrolled took to the street and demanded the police to nab the culprits behind this gruesome murder immediately.
Mukesh Agarwal, police Commissioner of Guwahati has constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe into the murder of the Girl.
The second incident took place in Ganeshguri area, of Guwahati, when a 20 year old girl named Sabina Begum was attacked in broad day light by
her male friend. The guy threatened her to come out of her hostel Narayanpur area in the evening and later over a fight he took out a blade from his pocket and started silting her neck. Later the locals rescued the girl and admitted her in Dispur hospital in a serious condition. The locals later handed the guy identified as Jannatul Fardus to Dispur police station.
The last incident, till the writing of the report is the gang-rape of a women in Boragaon area of Guwahati. The girl, who was traveling to Guwahati from Tinsukia district of Upper Assam with her male friend was later abandoned by her friend in the street. The girl who was standing in front a motor cycle repairing garage was pulled inside the garage by the workers of the garage. She was brutally raped by four mechanics inside. Somehow the girl managed to flee from the place.
Police has nabbed two of the four culprits. They have been identified as Suraj Mandal and Ajnur Ali. Police has started searching for the other two culprits.
Notably, Assam police has raised a special force Veerangana for women safety in Guwahati. But even then crime against women in Guwahati is escalating day by day. As per the reports of Northeast Network an NGO for rights of women, 70 percent women in Guwahati feels unsafe to go out from their homes.
