Five days after Ajenda Reang, 27, went missing from his home at Govindabari Kumar ADC village in Amarpur sub-division, 90 Km from here, his body was found hanging on a tree in a nearby forest this morning.

Speaking to this correspondent, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Amarpur) Souvik Dey said that Ajendra was found hanging from a tree in a forest at Brahmaniya Kuyri area, 8 Km from his home, He was missing with his motorcycle since five days. Woodcutters spotted the body this morning and informed Birganj police station.

The official also said certain phone calls were received from the deceased’s mobile phone while he was missing. The caller claimed himself as Ajendra and sought “help” saying he was in trouble.

“We searched him a several places in Mungiakami of Khowai district, Jatanbari and Karbook in Gomati district”, the SDPO said. The body, after its recovery this morning, was sent for post mortem examination.

Asked about his take on the case, SDPO Dey said preliminary investigation suggested it was suicide. However, further details could be given after post mortem examination reports arrived, he said.

Ajendra’s father Dharmajoy Reang, however, claimed his son was murdered and hanged. “There were black marks all over his body which come from severe beating. The body was hanged and also tied to the tree” Dharmajoy claimed.

Ajendra was the secretary of South Amarpur Local committee of Tribal Youth Federation (TYF), a youth body under the CPM youth wing – Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).

CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar claimed Ajendra’s death was a “cold blooded political murder” and demanded proper enquiry.

Dhar claimed at least two previous political murders were “veiled” as suicide cases and demanded a “proper enquiry” into the incident.

BJP denied role in the case and said framing suicides as murders was a “traditional way of CPM” to politicize things. He hoped police would eventually find out truth behind Ajendra’s death.

Earlier this month, another CPM leader Rakesh Dhar was found dead at Shantirbazaar in South Tripura district. His death was claimed to be suicide by the police too.
