AGARTALA: The Hyderabad District Badminton Association gave a cheque of Rs 25 lakh to Dipa Karmakar, the first female Indian gymnast who performed in Rio Olympics, in exchange of the BMW that was presented to her in recognition of her brilliant performance.
The car was gifted by Hyderabad Badminton Association president and businessman V Chamundeswaranath through Indian cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar.
She had requested cash for the value of the car because of bad road conditions of Tripura and absence of servicing facilities in the state.
“There is no showroom or service centre of BMW car in Tripura. If the car develops any technical snag during driving, how would I repair this? There is also no sufficient suitable roads in Agartala and other places of the mountainous state to ply the luxury car,” said the gymnast’s father Dulal Karmakar.
“Her family bought a car (Elantra) recently, and it was a brand that has a service centre in Agartala,” Karmakar’s coach Bisheshwar Nandi said, adding that Dipa of course was in need of a car but BMW was not a choice for logistic difficulties.
