By Our Reporter, TNT News | June 23, 2018:

As the resident doctors of NEIGRIHMS continue to lock horns with the administration over several problems in the Cardiology Department, the air of hostility lingers on as the protesting doctors await the arrival of the Director of the Institute, Dr DM Thappa, who is currently out of station.

The work strike called by the resident doctors of the Cardiology, who have been protesting against the 'unfair' conduct of DM examination and alleged harassment meted out by the Director on the students of the department, gained momentum on Saturday after the NEIGRIHMS Resident Doctors' Association (NRDA) joined in to extend support to the protesting resident doctors.

The resident doctors of the Cardiology Department had called for a three-day work strike which started on June 20 and ended on June 22. However, since the matter is still left unresolved, the strike remains in force.

The decision to extend their support to the resident doctors of Cardiology department was taken today at the executive meeting of the NRDA.

The NRDA was apprised of the problems faced by the department which included — Thesis evaluation report of DM examination, 2017, no 'transparency' in the process of conducting final year DM examination and 'harassment' meted out to the students of DM Cardiology and cancellation of type C quarters allotted to senior residents.

After a detailed discussion, the resident Doctors Association came to a common agreement that the protest by the Cardiology Resident Doctors is justified and requires a solution at the earliest for the benefit of the Institute.

In line with the above decision, the NRDA have laid down several demands which included —

  1. Provide evaluation report of all thesis papers submitted in the year 2017 for DM Cardiology so that a proper guideline can be followed in future.
  2. Address the grievances of Cardiology residents at the earliest and conduct the examination in a fair manner in consultation with the concerned department.
  3. Immediate revocation of the cancellation of type C quarters reserved for residents and allotment of quarters to deserving applicants. Consider increasing number of allotted type C quarters from 6-10.

In as far as the protests by residents of Department of Cardiology, the NRDA has demanded the administration to solve issues related to it by Monday afternoon, failing of which the NRDA will be forced to join the protest on Tuesday and shut down routine activities (emergency and bedside care will continue).

"We expect positively and urge the Director of NEIGRIHMS, Dr DM Thappa to call all the aggrieved residents of cardiology along with the faculties of the department of Cardiology and resolve the aforementioned issues amicably and come to an accountable solution following which NRDA will avoid the said agitation," read the letter submitted to the Director on Saturday.
