Meghalaya: One arrested for posting malicious messages on social media

A man has been arrested on Wednesday for uploading offensive and inflammatory posts on social media.

The man, identified as Manbhalang Nongspung, was arrested for posting inflammatory materials on social media, a police release stated. A case has been registered under section 153/153(A)/506/505/507 IPC  in Cyber Crime Police Station and he has been remanded to judicial custody.

In addition to this, nine other cases of cyber crime have also been registered. Police stated that the nine individuals have been summoned for questioning. "Many others have also been summoned for questioning in the above cases and due legal action will be taken against those who have infringed upon the laws of the land", the release stated.

A press notification by the Special Superintendent of Police, CID, Meghalaya states that the Meghalaya Cyber Crime Wing and CID will initiate action against those posting inflammatory materials on social media.

The Cyber Crime cell is actively monitoring the posts on social media which are offensive, inflammatory and derogatory. Such kind of posts are liable to legal action as per provisions of the IT Act, 2000/ the IT(Amendment)Act ,2008 and the Indian Penal Code.

The Meghalaya Police has also appealed to all citizens not to post any offensive and inflammatory materials on social media. Administrators of social media groups are to ensure that no offensive materials are posted by members of the group as these will be liable to legal actions.
