IN PICTURES | Rock graffiti: Meghalaya’s SWKH spreads a unique kind of voter’s awareness

In the remote areas of South West Khasi Hills in Meghalaya where communication challenges exist, voter's awareness is exhibited through a unique and durable way: rock graffiti.

In what appears to be an imaginative and cost-effective use of the local resources available to them, the Meghalaya Election department has decided to highlight the importance of voting rights as well as a just and fair election with one of the graffiti reading, "Thep vote… ym namar ka pisa, ka niam… hynrei ka roi ka par ki jaitbynriew" (Don't vote for money or religion, but vote for the general welfare of the public).

The graffiti appears in the run-up to the Ranikor and South Tura by-poll scheduled for August 23.

The Ranikor Assembly seat fell vacant after former Congress leader, Danggo resigned from the post of MLA to join the NPP.

South Tura is also in the midst of election fever and is set to witness a battle of four candidates including Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. The South Tura by-poll will be held simultaneously eith the Ranikor by-poll.
