Assam: Two dead as Rajdhani Express smashes into a car trapped in railway gate

GUWAHATI, July 16, 2018:

In a tragic incident, a man and his son were killed while his wife suffered grievous wounds after Rajdhani Express train ploughed into their car trapped inside a railway gate in Assam's Dibrugarh district on Sunday night.

The smash-up happened around 9pm in Chabua, an area dotted with tea-gardens. The dead have been identified as Bimal Sharma (65) and his son Arnav Sharma (26). Bimal's wife is undergoing treatment at the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh.

A senior police officer at Chabua said, "From what we know as of know, the person operating the railway gate did close the gate on one end but not the other one facing a tea garden area. From there the Sharma family drove in their car."

Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson said, "An inquiry of the highest level has been ordered under the Commissioner of Railway Safety, and a report is expected soon".

The police said the Sharmas' were returning after meeting their elder son who is an official in the tea garden.
