GUWAHATI, June 15, 2018:

One person has been arrested by the Guwahati police on Thursday for  creating a fake Facebook account using city police commissioner Hiren Nath's name.

The accused has been identified as Lakhyajyoti Phukan and was apprehended by cops in Nagaon, some 90km from Assam's capital. Sources said the accused had posted online hate messages earlier as well.

The commissioner's fake account had surfaced on Monday amidst a crackdown by the state police on rumour-mongers on social media following last Friday's lynching of two Guwahati youths by a mob in Karbi Anglong on suspicion of being child-lifters. Nath, who does not have a Facebook account himself, had said stern action will be taken against anyone found to be abusing the internet.
Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said, "At least 35 people have been arrested on charges of abusing internet platforms following the lynching."
Cops have also found minors involved in spreading rumours, who were later counselled by their parents and school authorities, the DG said.
