Assam: Rs 3 lakh as compensation for dead convicts’ kin

GUWAHATI, June 7, 2018: Assam government has been directed by the Gauhati High Court to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to the next kin of all those prisoners who died unnatural deaths while in prison.

The court said the compensation will have to be paid within 30 days. A division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Singh and Justice Achintya Malla Bujor Barua passed the order.

The government has told the high court that there were 16 unnatural deaths between 2012 and 2016 in different jails across the state.

As per to the state government, out of the same, the next of kin of two prison inmates were duly compensated as per the direction of the Assam Human Rights Commission as well as the high court and in remaining 14 cases, no compensation has been paid yet.
