Assam police arrest NSCN (K) cadre after tip-off from Meghalaya police

Weeks after the arrest of militants belonging to the NSCN (K) – Finance wing including the Deputy Secretary incharge revenue from West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, yet another cadre of the banned militant outfit was arrested on Saturday by Assam Police from Silchar based on the information shared by the Meghalaya Police.

According to West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, the police have been keeping a strict vigil on the presence and operation of militant outfits secretly operating in the state, following the arrest of the NSCN (K) cadres on May 13.

Later, the police were informed about another cadre of the same outfit, who had earlier been involved in extortion activities in the district but had traveled to Cachar district in Assam. The Meghalaya Police immediately informed the Assam police and the cadre identified as Dinganlung Rongmei (28) was arrested on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Assam police has confirmed the arrest of the NSCN (K) cadre from Cachar district.

It was also informed that besides extortion, the cadre was actively involved in procuring and supplying arms and weapons to the NSCN (K).

The Meghalaya Police will seek custody of the arrested cadre from their counterpart as a case against him has been registered in Jowai.

When asked whether the outfit, which usually operates in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh borders are trying to establish their base in Meghalaya, Syiem said the NSCN-K Finance wing appears to be using Jaintia hills as safe haven to elude the scanner of the security forces and carry on its extortion activity and finance network which includes procuring of arms and ammunition.
