Assam: Mentally-ill woman beaten up on suspicion of being child kidnapper

GUWAHATI, June 14, 2018: A mentally-ill woman was beaten up by residents of Jelem village, under Jonai subdivision in Dhemaji district, on Tuesday night on the suspicion of being a child kidnapper.

Prompt response by the police, however, saved the woman and she was immediately taken to a hospital.

Police said the woman was admitted in Jonai civil hospital with minor injuries. The police are still trying to find out her name and where she lives.

Four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident and a case registered at Jonai police station under Sections 143, 147, 325 and 307 of the IPC.

The woman has been roaming around the market for the past few days but no one came forward to identify her, said Anil Pegu, a businessman of Jonai town.
