Assam: Gang of thieves involved in theft of over 70 mobile tower batteries in Meghalaya busted

From Our Correspondent, TNT News | Tura, July 03, 2018:
A gang of thieves from Assam, involved in the theft of over 70 mobile tower batteries across the Garo Hills region, were apprehended by police in Boko in Assam while they were allegedly trying to steal batteries from a mobile tower.
According to North Garo Hills (NGH) police, the gang has been in operation for quite a while and had at least 7 members, five of whom landed up in the net of the police in Boko. As the crimes were committed in the state of Assam, the 5 were transferred to Meghalaya police and handed over to the Bajengdoba police station in NGH.
"They were responsible for the theft of at least 72 such batteries and confessed to their crimes when interrogated in Assam. As the crimes were committed in Meghalaya, they were handed over to us. An investigation into the matter is currently on and we expect more details to emerge soon," said superintendent of police, NGH, Dr Sacheng Marak.
The gang has cases registered in many places in the region, including Tura, Bajengdoba, Resubelpara, Kharkutta among other places. They would take advantage of the lack of security around mobile towers and prise out the batteries to be sold later. The cost of each battery is said to be very high though the exact amount could not be ascertained.
The gang members (five of them) were handed over yesterday, July 2.
