Assam: Duo arrested for kidney racket at Hatigaon

GUWAHATI, June 24, 2018: Two persons were arrested by the city police for duping a person who had sold his kidney to them.

A police source said that the victim had complained against the two brothers Manash Kamal Sarma and Parag Sarma, who had promised him Rs 6 lakh but did not pay after the kidney transplant in a Calcutta hospital in 2016. "They gave him a cheque for Rs 6 lakh but it bounced. They were avoiding him since."

The two were picked up from their rented house at Hatigaon.

The source said the accused had put an advertisement in newspapers in 2014 for a kidney and the victim, a resident of Boragaon here, responded. "When he called them, the duo promised to pay him Rs 6 lakh if he donates his kidney to a woman from Bongaigaon. The victim agreed since he was in dire need of money," the source said.

A case has been registered against the duo under Sections 420, 406 and 34 of the IPC at Dispur police station.

The source said a probe had revealed that the accused had taken Rs 10 lakh from the woman's family for the kidney but did not give the donor his share. "More details will come out after interrogation of the accused," the source said.

Police has suspected that the duo could be running a kidney transplant racket.
