Assam: Case against former vice-chancellor


GUWAHATI, July 9, 2018: On Sunday, a case has been registered against the former vice-chancellor of Assam University, Silchar, Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, at Dispur police station for allegedly promoting enmity between groups/communities.

The case was registered under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of the IPC.

The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by social activist Manash Chaliha, accusing Bhattacharjee of making objectionable comments about NRC update in a newspaper article.

According to the complainant, the contents of the article can create communal disharmony.
