At around 9am, Habibur Islam had called Lailima Begum of Nagaon town to his residence, said police.
"They had an altercation following which Habibur, accompanied by Saiful Islam and Fokrul Islam, took the girl to a nearby paddy field, doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze," police said.
Nagaon police said prime accused Habibur and his father Abdul Hai have been arrested while the other two are absconding.
Though Lailima, a trainee nurse, accused the three accused of setting her ablaze in her dying statement to the police, villagers alleged she could have committed suicide after coming to know that Habibur was married.
A villager said Lailima wanted to marry Habibur and had threatened to commit suicide if he refused to marry her.
Nagaon superintendent of police Shankar Jyoti Rai Medhi said: "We have recorded several statements of villagers accusing the woman of committing suicide. But we also have her statement accusing the three accused of torching her. Investigation is on and we will come to a conclusion only after examining every issue."
Efforts to contact family members of Habibur and Lailima proved futile.
