DHUBRI, May 27, 2018: Ritam Kundu, 16, committed suicide on Saturday after failing in the Class X High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination, the results of which were declared on Friday.

An only child, Ritam hanged himself from the ceiling fan at his house at Ward No. 5 here in the morning after his parents went to the market.

He was a student of S.P. English Medium High School in Dhubri town. He failed in five of the six subjects in the examination.

This is the second suicide in lower Assam over failure in the Class X HSLC examination since Friday. Nurzamina Begum, a student of Dubapara High School under Matia development block in Goalpara district, committed suicide after failing in the examination.

Altogether 69 students had appeared in the HSLC examination from S.P. English Medium High School. Of them, 44 passed in first division and 21 in second division, while four students, including Ritam, failed.

Kamal Shil, officer-in-charge of Dhubri Sadar police station, said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the CrPC. Ritam's body was handed over to his parents after post-mortem.

Ritam's parents said their son never showed any symptoms of depression or any aversion to his studies. "His behaviour was normal even after the results were declared," Ritam's father, Goutam Kundu, said.
