TECHNOLOGY | May 14, 2018 (TNN):

Telecom operator Airtel has responded to Reliance Jio's complaint against it over eSIM services for just-launched Apple Watch. In a statement the company said, "This is yet another frivolous complaint by a desperate operator, whose sole aim appears to have a monopoly over everything that they do. Bharti Airtel is a law abiding and responsible operator."

The statement added, "The DoT was duly notified prior to the launch of Apple watch including product features, network architecture and lawful interception and we have also requested them to carry out a demonstration of the same. All information relating to customers, network nodes etc. is hosted in a fully secure manner by Airtel India along with provision for lawful interception. We will be happy to share more details with the DoT as and when required."

Reliance Jio has filed a complaint against arch-rival Airtel with the Department of Telecom (DoT). In a letter sent to DoT, Jio alleged that the eSIM services being offered by Airtel on Apple Watch Series 3 are in violation of licence norms. "Apple Watch Series 3 service is being offered by Airtel in deliberate and gross violation to the terms and conditions of Unified License," Jio said in the letter.

Reliance Jio has demanded immediate closure of eSIM services being offered by Airtel.
Late last week, both Reliance Jio and Airtel started selling Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular in the country. Launched last year, Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular allows iPhone users to make and recieve calls without the need of the device. They can also continue to stream music and listen to it on Watch 3. With eSIM it's basically a 'mini iPhone' on users' wrist in terms of connectivity.
The Apple Watch Series 3 cellular functionality is supported by Apple iPhone 6 and above. Apple Watch 3 Cellular is available at Rs 39,080 (Model A1889, 38mm) and Rs 41,120 (Model A1891, 42mm).
