Tripura: TPCC to sponsor rail fare, food expenses for migrant workers

AGARTALA | May 5, 2020:

The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), in an emergency meeting of the party, decided to financially assist the migrant laborers by sponsoring their journey back home and food-related expenses. The meeting was held in response to the call of AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing the media, PCC president Pijush Biswas told the media after an emergency meeting of the party that AICC president Sonia Gandhi issued a statement to all the party heads in which she hit out at the ruling government for being indifferent to the labor class of the country.

He added that Sonia Gandhi addressed the workers and laborers that they are the ambassadors of our nation's growth.

She also pointed out that "if the Centre can arrange free air travel for our citizens stranded abroad, and when the government can spend nearly Rs 100 crore on transport and food for just one public program in Gujarat and also when the railway ministry has the largesse to donate Rs 151 crore to the PM's Corona fund, then why cannot these essential members of our nation's fabric be given a fraction of the same courtesy, especially free railway travel at this hour of acute distress."

Responding to this call of AICC Chief, TPCC held an emergency meeting, where the party decided to financially assist the migrant laborers who are now spending uncertain days at the mercy of the respective state governments for food and other facilities.

Pijush Biswas added that the party's state unit will start working promptly in this direction for which Specific circulars will be issued addressing all the local and grassroots level workers so that they can begin acting according to the decision.

He also informed that these local workers will be asked to gather the status of those people, residents from their locality, who are stranded outside the state.

Biswas also said that the PCC meeting also strongly commends the attack on Congress workers at Ranir Bazar area under Jirania subdivision when they were trying to distribute relief materials among people.

In the meeting, it was resolved that the Director-General of Police (DGP) will be asked to take proper action against the culprits involved in the attack.
