AGARTALA | JULY 28, 2020:

In an unfortunate incident, a 76-year-old man, who is a frequent visitor to the hospitals for Kidney treatment, breathed his last at the Tripurasundari District Hospital on Sunday, just within 15 minutes of testing positive for COVID-19 in Tripura.

The deceased would frequently visit the hospitals for the treatment of kidney and cardiac problems. After the elderly man started experiencing serious respiratory problems, his son took him to the district hospital on Sunday morning, where the two underwent mandatory rapid antigen tests.

According to The Indian Express news report, after the test results came positive, the authorities had allegedly kept the individuals waiting in a wheelchair for over an hour while arranging for an oxygen cylinder and the ambulance to take them to Agartala. By then, the elderly patient had died in a wheelchair.

Gomati District Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Niru Mohan Jamatia said, the patient's test report came back positive and he died within 15 minutes of testing positive.

However, the deceased's son claimed that the results of both of them testing positive were false and that his father died due to utter negligence of the hospital.

The son has now been admitted to a COVID Care Centre in Chandrapur.

Dr. Jamatia admitted that there was some delay in admitting the patient and explained that the same was caused since things were being prepared as per the government's guidelines.

"This was the first COVID-19 death in our district. It is very difficult to counsel people to help in handling the deceased. The sweeping staff didn't want to process it and no ambulance agreed to transport it to Agartala," the official explained.

Meanwhile, the state of Tripura has so far, registered a 63.22 percent recovery rate and a 0.43 percent mortality rate.
