16-yr-old gang-raped by 5 youths in Tripura; accused arrested

While the country is still burning over the Asifa rape and murder case in Kashmir, crime against women and children continues to make headlines across the nation with several cases being reported from different parts of India on a daily basis. Close to home, yet another minor rape case has been reported in Tripura where a 16-yr-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by a group of 5 men.

It was reported that on the night of April 15, when the entire state was celebrating Bengali New Year, the minor girl was returning home from tuition and on reaching Akon-Bakon area near the jail quarters, 5 youths allegedly kidnapped the girl, took her to the quarters of a deceased ex-jail employee and gang-raped her there.

The worried family members of the victim filled a missing complaint with the police after the girl didn't returned home from her tuition till wee hours of April 16.

After registering the complaint, the Dharmangar Police started searching for the girl. The police station got a tip off from someone inside the jail quarters, who saw 5 unidentified youths entering the quarters on the night of April 15. The police rushed to the crime scene, arrested the accused and rescued the victim.

In this connection, the police arrested all the 5 alleged kidnappers and rapists.

"We have arrested 5 youths –Mh Mustifa Ahmed (22),  Amar Hossain (24), Riaz Uddin (19), Mh Kalim Uddin (22) and Mana Mia (21). Three stolen bikes have also been recovered from them. Dharmanagar Women Police Station have also registered a case on 8/2018, under section 366 (A)/ 511/376/341-IPC against the wife of ex-jail employee Purnabasi Debbarma at whose quarters the shameful incident took place," said a police official of Dharmanagar Police Station.
