Nagaland: Congress not to contest by-poll to Lok Sabha seat

DIMAPUR, May 10, 2018: In a release, the Congress has announced that it will not contest the by-election, slated for May 28, to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland.

The release stated that since the Congress cannot support any political party that is aligned with the BJP, the Pradesh Congress executive committee will meet shortly and issue necessary directives to party workers on what to do next.

In a release on Wednesday evening, the Nagaland PCC said the Naga People's Front (NPF) has announced its candidate after having agreed in principle to its proposal for setting up a combined Opposition candidate to uphold the principles of secularism and democracy.

The ruling People's Democratic Alliance (PDA) and the NPF, on the other hand, distributed tickets to their respective candidates to contest the byelection.

The last date for filing of nominations for the by-election ends on Thursday.

The lone Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following incumbent Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio's resignation in February to contest the state Assembly election on the NDPP ticket.
