Three Mizoram’s ADCs hold protests against Mizoram government's stand on the Sixth Schedule Amendment

The three Autonomous District Councils (ADC) in Mizoram were up in arms against the Mizoram government’s “negative comments”, regarding the proposed changes to the Sixth Schedule Amendment to the Constitution of India.

Irrespective of political affiliations, people came out in protest against the Mizoram government's alleged objection to the proposed amendment in all the headquarters of the Lai, Mara and Chakma autonomous district councils in southern Mizoram today.

In Kalamanagar, the seat of Chakma ADC, around 1000 people from all political parties joined the peaceful protest, while braving the rains and demanding the government to revoke its comments.

A copy of the Government of Mizoram’s comments was burnt as a mark of protest. 

Simultaneous peaceful protests were held at Lawngtlai, the headquarters of Lai ADC and Siaha, the headquarters of Mara ADC.

The Mizoram government has reportedly objected to the renaming of the ADCs as Autonomous Territorial Councils (ATC).

The State government has maintained that the term 'Autonomous Territorial Council' is used when an autonomous district council extends to more than one revenue district in a state, which is not the case in any of the three ADCs in Mizoram.

The government further objected to the proposed inclusion of the representatives of the three ADCs in the State Finance Commission, likening it to suggestions that representatives of states be included in the Union Finance Commission.

“The State Finance Commission has always been free and fair in its recommendations for funding by way of percentile allocation to each Autonomous District Council from the State Budget,” the Mizoram government has commented on the proposal.
