Meghalaya CM to campaign for UDP candidate in Shella bypoll
SHILLONG | Oct 6, 2019:
Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma will be campaigning for the United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate and former Assembly Speaker, late Dr. Donkupar Roy's son, Balajied Kupar Synremin the October 21 bye-election for the Shella Assembly constituency.
"Chief Minister will start campaigning for our candidate after he returns from abroad on October 11. He (Conrad) is expected to address at least three public meetings during his campaign for the bye-election," UDP vice president, Allantry F. Dkhar informed here today.
According to him, the campaign by the Chief Minister will be a huge boost for the prospect of the party candidate to win the bye-election.
When apprised of the statement made by party leader and Cabinet Minister, Kyrmen Shylla where he admitted that the bye-election in Shella will not an easy battle for the UDP, Dkhar said that he (Kyrmen) has not been properly briefed about the prospects of the party candidate in this election.
"In this election, we are getting support even from people who were not supporting late Dr. Roy in the previous elections. I have never seen such support for the party candidate in Shella constituency" UDP vice president said. He also said that they are expecting that Dr Roy's son will win by a bigger margin in this election.
Replying to a question if the decision of two of the MDA partners- PDF and BJP– is an advantage of the party, Dkhar said that with more candidates in the fray, it would mean that the votes would be split. "This will be a plus point for the party prospects," he said. The UDP vice president also countered the claim of the PDF that the party votes in the last election has remained intact.
