SHILLONG:

The state government on December 21 said that it is the choice of the people residing in the interstate border areas to decide which state they would want to be a part of.

Reacting to allegations that the people in the border villages are being pressurised to be a part of Meghalaya, chief minister Conrad Sangma said, “I don't think it's possible to pressurise anybody in any way. Of course, people will make the choice and we have left it to the people to express their concerns.”

He further added that the people have been living in that area for a long time and they will decide what's best for them.

“There may be concerns from the Assam government but we are very much in touch because the Assam chief minister and I have been speaking to him regularly,” added Sangma.

The chief minister further assured that they will divulge more details about the efforts taken to resolve the long-pending interstate border issue in a day or two.

Earlier, the regional committees have submitted their reports on the six areas of disputes to the chief minister.
