SHILLONG:

One person has been arrested today for his alleged involvement in planting an IED in front of the National People's Party (NPP) office at Lower Lachumiere, informed chief minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday.

Speaking to the press, Sangma added that the accused is currently being interrogated by the police, and the public will be briefed on further developments in due time.

Asked if such a threat will have any effect on the upcoming bye-election, the chief minister said, "You see, we cannot take these threats lightly. But we are sure (that) with the work that the agencies are doing right now, the work that the police are doing right now, we should be able to normalise the situation to a large extent…”

The Chief Minister also assured enough security to all candidates of all political parties contesting in the October 30 bye-elections to the three Assembly seats of Mawryngkneng, Mawphlang and Rajabala.

On the outfit threatening to shoot ministers of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, Sangma said, "As I said, the threat may be there, but the agencies are doing their work. We are ensuring that no such threat or no such incidents will occur, and we are confident that all steps will be taken to ensure all our people are protected”.

The proscribed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) had claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing shortly after reports of the bomb went around on October 4.
