Merger with Trinamool will bring brighter prospects for Meghalaya, says Charles Pyngrope
“If it comes my way, I will take it. But I am not eyeing anything,” said the former Assembly Speaker on allegations of him eyeing a Rajya Sabha seat.

Hours after formally joining the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), former Assembly Speaker and Nongthymmai legislator, Charles Pyngrope said that the motive behind the move is to serve the people of the state better.
“We hope and we know that this merger will bring a brighter prospect for the state, the entire region and subsequently, the entire country,” said Pyngrope, addressing the press on November 25.
He also said that the collective decision has not been coerced by any external factors. “It was our own decision. We gave it a deep thought for the larger interest of our people. I hope that from today onwards, you will see a team that will work towards achieving that hope and aspirations of the people,” he said.
Pyngrope also asserted on the need to expand the AITC in the Northeast in a bid to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “Our bigger purpose is to take on the NDA government in the next elections,” he said.
Sharing his meeting with the IPAC leader Prashant Kishor, he said, “His (Kishor) views, ideas and vision to take the country forward and fight against the divisive and communal forces, match with what we have in mind.”
“Therefore, it was in the best interest of the people that we join hands for a better cause to remove the ambiguity that is happening in our country and ensure every one of us get a space to live within the parameters of the constitution and fundamental rights,” he added.
Pyngrope also said that the AITC has proved its worth in the country and working with them will help the Congress defectors to do immeasurable good for the people of Meghalaya.
“The team that is working with them (AITC) will be working with us. So, with strategic thinking and analytic processing we will become the leaders we need to be, and deliver what the people need. The decision was, therefore, taken for that reason,” he stated.
The former Assembly Speaker, however, downplayed allegations that he is eyeing for a Rajya Sabha seat.
“Well, if it comes my way, I will take it but I am not eyeing anything. Whatever I have done in my 20-year-old political career, it is through due diligence and hard work. I have not sought for any political chair during my career… I was offered many posts but I didn’t take (as) for me the interest of the people is paramount in my heart,” he said.
