Meghalaya: Militant involved in Aug 2 encounter in GH surrenders; later arrested

It may be reminded that the encounter led to the death of one NDFB (S) militant during the cross fire while another from the same gang was lynched by an angry mob after being discovered while the rest were able to flee.

Almost 2 months after security forces clashed with militants in the thick jungles of Garo Hills in the month of August, one of the militants, involved in the encounter, belonging to the A'chik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA), surrendered to the East Garo Hills (EGH) police at the Rongjeng PS yesterday.

The militant was later arrested by the police after he was found to be involved in a case of encounter with the police at Tarasin village under Songsak PS on Aug 2 this year.

The surrender took place at about 10:30 am yesterday, Oct 17. Sengpan N Marak, a resident of Pakregre, Chijong Apal under Rongjeng PS surrendered with a demand note pad of the outfit.

"He admitted that he was a part of the same group that was present in the encounter that took place at Tarasin village. He also revealed that he had received a bullet injury in his left hand during encounter," said superintendent of police, EGH, Ringrang TG Momin.

It may be reminded that the encounter led to the death of one NDFB (S) militant during the cross fire while another from the same gang was lynched by an angry mob after being discovered while the rest were able to flee.

A few more members of the same group were also picked up by the police after the encounter.

"Prior to the encounter, the group had been extorting money from several people. He was arrested in connection with Songsak PS Case No. 15(8)2018 U/S 353/307/34 IPC r/w Sec. 25(1A) (1B)/27 Arms Act," added Ringrang.
