Meghalaya: MDA yet to decide on ‘common candidate’ for Shillong, Tura LS seats

SHILLONG | March 09, 2019:

The major ally in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, the National People's Party (NPP) has not given up on the idea of putting up a common candidate for both Shillong and Tura Parliamentary seats.

"We have not given up the option of putting up a common candidate of the alliance for both the seats. The MDA coordination committee is meeting next week to take a final call on this matter," Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, who is also the senior NPP leader, told reporters on the sideline of a function here today.

When asked about the Meghalaya BJP's decision to constitute an Election Committee for the Lok Sabha polls, he said that there is no bar for any party, that is part of the MDA, to prepare the ground work for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

To a question that if the decision of the UDP to go ahead in announcing the name of its leader Jemino Mawthoh as the common candidate would create a rift within the alliance, he said that the question of any kind of differences amongst the allies does not arise in view of the decision of the UDP since it is the MDA which will take a final decision on the matter.

On the announcement of the NPP president, Conrad K Sangma that the party would contest all the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the Northeast, he said that this is the intention of the party.

"The decision to contest from all the seats would be taken after looking at the ground reality on the party's chances," he said. The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the issue of the common candidate of the MDA is not closed even as the Lok Sabha polls is just round the corner.

It may be mentioned that the idea to have the common candidate of the MDA was projected by the UDP. According to the UDP, by having a common candidate it would ensure the victory of the allies from the two Parliamentary seats in the State.

The UDP had also staked its claim that they should be given a chance to contest the Shillong Parliamentary seats being one of the major ally in the MDA while the Tura Parliamentary seats should go to the NPP.

However, none of the allies including the BJP, PDF and HSPDP are keen to agree with the UDP's proposal. All the partners in the alliance insist it should be the MDA coordination committee which should decide on this.

It was during the meeting of the coordination committee where a decision was taken that all the allies should propose a name for the common candidate before the committee.

Besides the UDP, the HSPDP had decided to project the name of its part MLA, Renikton Tongkhar as the common candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.
