Meghalaya: Jowai Police arrest man for defaming Shillong Archbishop on Facebook

SHILLONG | Oct 15, 2019:

The Jowai Police today arrested one Rimialson Daw from Nongjngi for trying to defame Arch Bishop of Shillong, late Rev. Dominic Jala by posting derogatory remarks on his Facebook page.

The Jowai police made this arrest following an FIR filed by one resident from Jowai yesterday.

Informing this, West Jaintia Hills police, Lakador Syiem said that the Jowai police had received a written complaint on October 14 that one person whose name, as per his Facebook Account, Rimialson Daw posted a derogatory post on his Facebook Account which had hurt the sentiments of the Catholic Church.


"Immediately on receipt of the complaint, the Dy. Superintendent of Police (Hqr), Jowai took swift action to contact and establish the identity and locate the person. On establishing the contact, the person was detained and brought to Jowai Police Station for questioning and also sent for medical examination," Syiem said.

According to him, his relatives have claimed that he is mentally unstable and under treatment. The SP further informed that the investigation into the case is in progress.

According to his Facebook profile, besides the derogatory remarks against Late Rev Dominic Jala, the man also posted many pictures claiming to be the Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), claimed to be a doctor, a scientist, a professor and husband of Former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai besides many other Bollywood actresses. He also claimed to be the General(Indian Army),Chief Air Marshall (Indian Airforce)& Admiral(Indian Navy).
