Meghalaya: Conrad justifies decision to accompany PM Modi to file nomination

SHILLONG | April 27, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister on Saturday justified his decision to accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi to file his nomination for Varanasi Lok Sabha seat on Friday stating "We have been very clear on our stand and we have been working with the NDA."

Speaking to newsmen on the sideline of a programme in Shillong today, Conrad said that there is no doubt about the relations between the National People's Party (NPP) and the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

"I don't know why opposition is making this an issue. Obviously we have been fighting with the Congress in the past. There is no doubt about that..But that does not mean that we accept everything that is said in the coalition or everything that the NDA and BJP put on us," Conrad who is also the national president of NPP, said.

Earlier, the Opposition Congress had questioned the Chief Minister's presence in Varanasi yesterday to accompany Prime Minister, Narendra Modi when he filed his nomination to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

He asserted that the party and the MDA Government will make decisions based on the best interests of the people adding that when it needs to be fought they are ready to fight.

In a Facebook message, Congress MLA, Zenith M Sangma aid the BJP had fielded its candidates only to disguise its deep relationship with the NPP, and that too at the request of Conrad, knowing well that people of Garo Hills are agitated and allergic to the saffron party because of their "evil designs" and anti-people and anti-tribal policies.

"But now once the elections are over in his home state, he has gone to Varanasi to show solidarity and extend full support to his godfather Narendra Modi," Zenith said.

"Is it not betrayal? When the tribal people and minority religious communities are ceaselessly praying that BJP should not come back to power," the Congress MLA said.

Meghalaya Chief Minister, however, said that at the same time it is important to remember that during the NDA rule in the last five years, a lot of development was taken up for the Northeast.

"In the last one year of the governance that took place, a lot of schemes, almost 4-5 times funds under the Central sponsored schemes, has come in compared to the last year. Therefore, we have seen huge funds to roll out developmental projects have come in," Conrad said.

He said that one should appreciate the work being done by the Government at the Centre.

"The PMGSY has seen a ten-fold jump in terms of the money sanctioned from Rs 140 crore to Rs 1400 crore for one year itself. Therefore, I think one must realize the good work which has been done. He however maintained that as the party and as the Government, they will not shy away when it comes to taking a stand on the rights of the people.

"There is a point where we stand against issues and there is a point where we work towards development. We are concern about the development issue and we will continue to work for the deveopment. At the same time, we will ensure that our people's rights are not affected and our people are protected," he added.
